About Our Church
St Luke AME Church is located at 8411 Main Street in the historic district of Ellicott City, Maryland. The church had its beginnings in Oella, Maryland and remained there until 1860. A parcel of land was purchased by the Trustees from Thomas Isacc and his wife for the sole purpose of building a place of worship. This property was located on Merryman Street, then known as " Missionary Bottom". A log cabin was erected and called the "Colored Church of Ellicott City". This building presently stands directly across from the current location
It was also in 1860 that this place of worship was incorporated by the General Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal Church and was named St. Luke AME Church.
In later years the Trustees were authorized to attend a meeting concerning the purchase of the current property. On October 19, 1896, the Trustees received the deed to this current location and the cornerstone was laid. The Trustees were Oliver Scott, Jonas Neal, Wesley Neal, William Adams, Jerry Dent, Horace Raveling and Alexander Butler.
Some of the present members were the direct descendants of the original signers of this deed.
Meet Our Pastor
Rev. Danielle L. Hipkins

Rev. Danielle L. Hipkins was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, and is a proud fourth-generation member of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. She credits her spiritual foundation and love for African Methodism to her grandfather, who introduced her to God and the teachings of the AME Church from a young age.
Rev. Hipkins received her early education through the Archdiocese of Baltimore and went on to earn her undergraduate degree from Notre Dame of Maryland University. Committed to deepening her theological understanding and ministerial calling, she pursued and completed a Master of Divinity at Payne Theological Seminary.
Her journey in ministry has included impactful service as a Youth and Young Adult Minister, preparing her to step into broader leadership. In July 2022, she was appointed Pastor of St. Luke African Methodist Episcopal Church, where she continues to lead with passion, purpose, and a heart for God’s people.
Beyond the local church, Rev. Hipkins serves as President of the Richard Allen Young Adult Council for the Second Episcopal District, empowering and equipping young leaders to carry the torch of faith and justice.
Her personal testimony is a powerful witness to God’s grace—she is a grateful recipient of a life-saving kidney transplant, made possible by the selfless gift of her sister, Christina Hipkins. She also cherishes her role as a loving aunt to Kaydyn and Kingsley Hipkins.
Rev. Hipkins lives by the words of her favorite scripture, Psalm 34:4: “I sought the Lord, and He answered me and delivered me from all my fears.” Her ministry is rooted in faith, resilience, and a commitment to serve with authenticity and love.
